MEDF Teaching Farm

Michael Kaburi

I am the Project Manager of the Mitahato Education and Development Fund (MEDF); a Community based organization working with smallholder farmers in rural Kenya. My work in MEDF involves but not limited to: Organizing and coordinating farmers field training program, fundraising and developing partnerships. I hold a Bachelors degree in Project Planning and Management at Moi University; Kenya. Sharing knowledge through Skype in the Classroom about sustainable livelihoods is my passion. I seek to inspire the youth to develop passion in agribusiness as viable business opportunity and channel for food security. I co-produced for two full seasons in a National Tv Show on farming "Kenya Farm Report"

We met Michael Kaburi.

Visit the Kenyan Countryside and experience life on our farm!
Living here in the Kenyan countryside is a wonderful place to be! It gives you that connection with nature that many of us who live in urban environments rarely have the opportunity to experience. At the MEDF Teaching Farm we live in harmony with nature.

Through “Skype in the Classroom” teachers and students will have the feeling of being here at the Teaching Farm in the Kenyan countryside. Your Virtual Field Trip will be both educative and fun. Your students will have a live farm experience half a world away. Connecting with farm animals is both fun and a wonderful learning experience.
  • See our fresh strawberries, and how we make fresh salad from our kitchen garden
  • Preparation of seed beds and nurseries,
  • Planting mobile kitchen gardens
  • Learn how we incubate our kenyenji chickens for the local farmers
  • Construction of in-ground water reservoirs for harvesting Kenya’s precious water supply.
  • The bleating of the goats and honking of the guinea fowls will welcome them to our barns
  • Learn more about our rabbits, goats and pigs.

Our work here focuses on kitchen gardening for food security and nutrition. We use the concept of a ¼ acre model farm to show our smallholder farmers how a small scale integrated farm of horticulture and small animal husbandry can create sustainable family income.

We believe both plants and animals share a symbiotic relationship especially when it comes to organic farming.
We invite you to bring your classroom here to the Teaching Farm and experience the Kenyan countryside and the life of smallholder farmers.
